Interview with Revlayer Founder, Allen Stern

revlayerRevlayer, the New York startup offer a great and easy way to make money with any video on your website or blog. I had the chance to interview the founder Allen Stern today. Revlayer is the first ad system for website and blog owners that can be used within videos from many major video sites like YouTube, Google Video and more. You can see how it works over here and you can see how WebSquirrel is using Revlayer over here.

Allen, what is Revlayer and how does it work?
Revlayer is a new way for bloggers and Web site owners to generate additional revenue from the videos they embed. After completing our research, we concluded that video networks and content creators were generating all of the revenue and nothing went to the bloggers who spread the video. We aim to change that.

How can Revlayer help website and blog owners?
It's super easy to use Revlayer. Signup, paste the code into your site or blog and you are done. What's great about how Revlayer works is if you have videos on your site from a year ago, they will automatically work as well. No code changes whatsoever to the video player. We currently work with about 10 of the largest video services and are continuing to add new players weekly.

Tell us a bit about your team.
There are three of us currently. Felix Shnir handles the front-end development, Sam Falah takes care of the back-end and I handle the business development and customer service.

When did you come up with the idea about Revlayer?
I have thought about video advertising over the past 18 months. There are many video advertising companies in the market today but none help bloggers and Web site owners generate revenue on the videos they embed. I saw this as a market need and then the plans for Revlayer began.

You are now one week live with Revlayer, tell us a bit about your first week as a startup - I am sure it was exciting and a lot of work as well.
In our first week, we have several hundred sites using Revlayer and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Lots of customer service and business partnership questions. I have learned to turn off the business phone when I go to sleep as people call at 3am!

Can you tell us a bit more about what you plan within the next weeks - what are you next steps?
On the business side, our plan is to sign advertisers. I have spoken with a variety of ad networks and individual companies who are interested in joining our platform. On the technical side, we continue to increase the number of video players that Revlayer works with. We are also working on a white label version of Revlayer for companies who want to brand our platform. Oh yea, an affiliate program is also coming soon.

I have heard you are in talk with some investors - can you confirm that? While I can't go into any details, we have been contacted by a variety of investors, from traditional vc firms to angel investors. We are open to funding as this would help us reach our objectives quicker.

Thanks for this Interview Allen, and all the best with Revlayer

iPhone at the Supermarket? Ouch!

One of Germany biggest low priced retailers for electronic & media products Media Markt is showing an iPhone ad on their website and says that the iPhone will be available in Germany at the end of the year and in a subline it also says "This product is not available at Media Markt at the moment". The last sentence show us that it is more a huge marketing joke rather than an offer for the iPhone soon to be on sale at Media Mark. Media Markt is well known as a retailer with extraordinary marketing campaigns in the past. There overall image is "we are cheap and if someone is cheaper we drop that price as well". I don't know if Apple is a fan of this marketing campaign - probably not and I can't believe that Apple gave their ok for that. For me it doesn't fit to the iPhone and it is more a bad marketing for the high priced iPhone in my point of view - like buying the iPhone at Best Buy. I also think that T-Mobile or who ever will sell the iPhone in Germany are not happy about this campaign and it will be interesting to see how long this campaign will be up.

Update: On request, Media Markt press department says: "The iPhone Ad is not an indication that Media Markt will sell the iPhone in the future."
:) Very funny, they make ad's for products that they never will sell - interesting strategy!

FireFox Up - IE Down

On May 11. this year I took a look at my Browser Stats from WebSquirrel - you can read my post over here. Today I did it again and oh wonder IE is dropping more and more. Well, I know that my blog isn't the perfect source for browser stats but it shows us, beside some other articles, that IE is going down.

Firefox 2.0 climbed from 52% in May too now 54% in July. IE 6 drops from 20% to 16%, while IE 7 goes a bit up from 12% in May to 14% now. FireFox 1.x is still a big number as well but I think with the latest updatet to FireFox 2.0.0.5 and the update stop for FireFox 1.x we will soon see FireFox 2.x on this list only. Opera and Safari are head to head and this didn't change since May. Perhaps that will change soon with a lot of shipped iPhones including Safari!

iPod Shuffle Luxury Flavor

Are you not satisfied with the color options for the iPod Shuffle? If you don't like blue, green, pink or brushed metal - perhaps you can try the new golden one. Ok, it is a bit more expensive than the normal Shuffle because it is made out of "real" Gold. German Company Xexoo offering the iPod Shuffle made out of 18 carat gold for about 14,000 EUR ($19.343). If you like it a bit more blinky - there is also an upgrade with diamonds available soon. Every customer get 24/7/365 support and the golden iPod Shuffle will be delivered in a nice wooden box in Piano style. For the support it doesn't matter where you are on the planet, they will try to exchange the Shuffle as soon as possible when there are any problems. So if your Shuffle drops into your pool beside your luxury house - no problem.

Apple Store Update

Yes, the Apple Store is offline since some hours now. I wonder what the hell they are doing to take this site down for more than one hour. I think this is more than only some Product Updates. Updates soon!

Update:
Apple Store still offline. Now over 8 hours!

iPhone on T-Mobile in Germany!

Different sources telling that the iPhone is soon available via T-Mobile in Germany. Yesterday on July 16. it was possible to access a T-Mobile Website at www.t-mobile.de/iphone but it only showed some test website. Seems that t-mobile finaly made it. German Newspaper and Online Magazin Focus found the website yesterday and informed T-Mobile about the failure. The subsite has now been removed. I also heard from some geeks that they enter every Vodafone store around, ask for the iPhone and when it will be available to make some fun with Vodafone...

Also, biggest Apple Retailer Gravis in Germany has also something great for German iPhone fans. In some Gravis stores it is possible to "touch" the Jesus Phone and check how it works. They offer sessions in many differnt cities in germany. So when you are living in Germany head over to Gravis Website to check the cities available.

Acrobat Reader is a Pain!

I am an Adobe Acrobat Reader user from the first hours and I can remember installing the version 1.0 on my Windows Machine some years ago. Over the years Adobe got bigger and reveals more and more features to Acrobat Reader and we finaly made it to version 8.1. But do we really need it?

All I can say: "I am not a fan of it anymore". The auto updater makes me feel bad - everytime I start the Reader it tries to connect to some server and checking updates. When you disable this update function there is no change it tries to connect all the time. Also, Reader installs two unneeded icons in every Office application and ruin your office toolbars. If you want to turn this feature off - it will not work. Reader can now send request to servers, can run JavaScript and last week I got a ton of mails with PDF Virus attacks.

I don't know why we need this hell crap - I simply want to read a PDF and nothing more. When it is possible I use the Apple Preview to read a PDF - its simple, easy and really fast in loading. I can't wait for new Leopard with even better preview functions.

@Adobe: Think about your product policy and don't ruin your customer relationship!

Google AdWords Ad

Today I found this AdWords Ad in a business Newspaper in Germany. The Ad is a Coupon or Credit Voucher for 30,-- EUR AdWords usage. I also found a special Ad for Google Maps later the year. Seems that Google is doing more and more special Ads to collect new customers.

Snakes on the iPhone

Do you know the famous Snake Game from your loved Nokia? When you switched too an iPhone you don't have that nice game - bummer. Today I found Snake for the iPhone. It is called iSnake - who wonders - and it is more a test than a full game, I think. But the game shows you that it is possible to code games in the browser. I do not have an iPhone so far and thus I can't check it out on the real iPhone - but i tried it on Safari on my iMac. If you like playing Snakes on your mobile iSnakes is great and worth a try. Point your iPhone over to gamgogames.com/iSnake and play some rounds. You can even save your score in a world wide highscore list.
The controls are a bit tricky - you need to click/tap at the borders of the green playfield to move the Snake into a special direction. Have fun!
